For this circle gathering visual artist and trained architect Ola Hassanain collaborates with Farouk, Teferi, Mohammed (Hammo) and Sami of social rebellion label ‘We Sell Reality’. Working on questions around what it means to inhabit space in a city as Amsterdam, having to navigate it’s immigration policies as well as material living conditions. How do you assert yourself and carve out space amidst oppressive government policies? In the face of the uncertainties and waiting that comes with an immigrant status?
In this circle the group focuses on the various everyday actions and words created rituals which extend threads of consistency in their lives. Deriving a notion of space in which exercising culture, constitutes habitability of a city.
The gathering starts with a video essay honoring these everyday rituals, demonstrating ways in which the circle members connect to -, and reflect on, the city. Leading up to a conversation on what inhabiting means in a different geography and culture.
Ola Hassanain leads a critical spatial practice as a visual artist and trained architect. In her work, she focuses on the subtle politics of space—namely, how built spaces react to and reinforce violence from state entities. She situated the built environment as something that regulates the lives of those who inhabit it. Ola premises her work on an idea of “space as political discourse,” an expanded notion of space that tries to develop spatial vocabularies that make it possible to aspire to new kinds of ecologies. Ola's development of critical spatial practice is partly informed by her post-academic training; an ongoing Rijksakademie residency, a BAK fellowship 2017-2018, and teaching a Blackerblackness Master course Sandberg Instituut 2021- Ongoing and HKU University of the Arts Utrecht at the Fine Art Department 2017- ongoing, amongst other international collaborations.
We Sell Reality is a social rebellion label that focuses on making products, graphics, installations and performances. The collective currently consists of 15 social designers. Most members are refugees in limbo.

Ola Hassanain leidt een kritische ruimtelijke praktijk als beeldend kunstenaar en architect. In haar werk richt ze zich op de subtiele politiek van - ruimte - namelijk hoe gebouwde ruimtes reageren op geweld van staatsentiteiten en dit versterken. Ze heeft de gebouwde omgeving gesitueerd als iets dat het leven reguleert van degenen die erin wonen. Ola baseert haar werk op een idee van "ruimte als politiek discours", een uitgebreide notie van ruimte die ruimtelijke vocabulaires probeert te ontwikkelen die het mogelijk maken om te streven naar nieuwe soorten ecologieën. Ola's ontwikkeling van een kritische ruimtelijke praktijk is deels geïnformeerd door haar post-academische opleiding; een doorlopende Rijksakademie residentie, een BAK fellowship 2017-2018, en het doceren van een Blackerblackness Master cursus Sandberg Instituut 2021- doorlopend en HKU Universiteit van de Kunsten Utrecht bij de Fine Art Department 2017- doorlopend, naast andere internationale samenwerkingen.
