National Organ Day

9 September 2023

11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

organists Matteo Imbruno and Giacomo Benedetti play

Invite someone along

National Organ Day takes place every year on the second Saturday in September. That day coincides with Open Monumentendag. At numerous locations in the Netherlands, not only can you visit monumental (church) buildings, but the organs you often find there are also the centre of attention. Organs can be heard, looked at and sometimes even played throughout the country.

On the occasion of National Organ Day, organists Matteo Imbruno and Giacomo Benedetti will play several concerts on the three church organs in the Oude Kerk on Saturday 9 September between 11:00-15:00. It will be a fascinating journey through music history with personally chosen favourite pieces by the two organists as works by composer Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, who was associated with the Oude Kerk during his lifetime and was pivotal in Amsterdam's musical life.

Programme is free with a ticket to the Oude Kerk

About the organists

Organist Matteo Imbruno has been organist-titular at the Oude Kerk since May 1997, the same position held by Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck in the seventeenth century. Imbruno studied organ in Bologna (Liuwe Tamminga), Rotterdam (Bernard Winsemius) and Lübeck (Martin Haselböck). As a concert artist, Imbruno has played in the most prestigious festivals and music centres in Europe, Japan, South America and the United States.

Giacomo Benedetti graduated in Organ and Organ Composition from the "S. Pietro a Majella" Conservatory in Naples with Maestro Libertucci and is titular organist at the Basilica of San Miniato al Monte in Florence and of S. Felicita in Florence. He also works at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Theatre and at the L. Cherubini Conservatory and at the Fiesole School of Music as Collaborator Master on the harpsichord and organ. He gives Masters in Italy for various associations, is professor of organ at the Centro Arte e Studi in Florence and gives concerts as organist and harpsichordist in Italy and abroad.
